Abstract
Although not as widely known as his other works, Sir Cyril Burt, as a leading educational psychologist, made a major contribution in the 1950s to the design of educational and instructional texts. Indeed he published a textbook on the topic (Burt, 1959). Much of what he said was sensible but like his other works, subject to later doubt about its veracity. Burt’s concerns are still discussed today in the context of technological developments but his actual publications are rarely referred to. This brief note comments on this work and subsequent developments.
