‘The ethos of the school has shifted’: The perceived impact of a systemic approach to supporting children’s mental health and emotional wellbeing in schools

Abstract

This article outlines a service commissioned evaluation of the Targeted Mental Health in School (TaMHS) programme within one Local Authority (LA) in the East Midlands. Senior leaders from thirteen schools took part in semi-structured interviews exploring the perceived impact of the programme and how it could be improved. Four main themes emerged from the qualitative data in relation to the positive impact of participation in the programme: Building capacity; Responding differently to mental health and wellbeing; Ecological; and Positive outcomes. Areas for programme improvement included: Planning and process factors; Greater communication; and Wider stakeholder involvement. A brief discussion of the limitations and implications of the research is also provided.
