Dialogues and Debates:Counselling psychology in the UK: A 30-year passage

Abstract

Content and FocusCounselling psychology’s 30-year passage in the UK, its origins and philosophy, open a reflective article that also considers training, research and practice. Academic and reflective practitioner’s roles grounded in human science often work in contexts where natural science predominates. The effects of the influence of recent economic and political changes are considered; this discipline’s responses to these effects are outlined. This article is a summary of an invited address given in Melbourne, Australia, in February, 2013.ConclusionsThe sharing of the philosophy, practice, research and training of counselling psychologists across countries in an increasingly aware international climate will have advantages for the discipline; however, the fuller benefits remain to be explored.
