Abstract
Psychological change is the endeavour of psychotherapy. To better understand the principles of change, a literature review was undertaken and revealed that, in general, principles of change are not commonly discussed. Our review helped us identify some of the gaps that need to be filled in the literature if a thorough conceptualisation of change is to emerge. Specifically we discovered that the change process is not adequately defined, confusion exists regarding the conceptual distinction between the change process and the psychotherapy process, and clients’ perceptions regarding change are often disregarded in change research. We provide our ideas for future research at the end of the paper.
