Does therapy make things worse? Investigating episodes of psychological therapy where clients’ scores showed reliable deterioration

Abstract

Case data of 43 score deteriorators from 1,416 clients over five years were analysed. Therapists’ explanations for deterioration focused on the client, not the therapist or therapy. Investigating deterioration after therapy is important and complex but anxiety-provoking for therapists. Triangulation by client follow-up is recommended.
