Distinctions in coaching practice between England and the rest of Europe

Abstract

This article seeks to identify distinctions in the practice between coaches based in England and those based in 45 other responder nations across Europe. Analysis was based on the data generated for The State of Play in European Coaching and Mentoring (2017) research report. Distinctions were observed for the amount of reflective practice methods used by coaches in England, their increased likelihood to use formal supervision, and their greater probability to use webinars as a tool to aid their continuing professional development and to draw on a wide range of approaches in their coaching work. Finally, there was a distinction in the greater propensity for England-based coaches to use verbal contracting when starting work with new clients. The similarity in the data set for England and the overall data set for Europe as a whole is considered and recommendations made for further research.
