Abstract
Backcountry medicolegal death investigation is defined as the investigation of a death of a person or persons in an outdoor setting not easily accessible by conventional means. Deaths in the backcountry reflect many of the common causes and manners of death encountered in routine death investigations. However, there are many issues unique to such investigations including scene access, conditions and hazards, jurisdiction, decomposition and animal predation, and body recovery/extrication. This paper will review the unique features of such investigations and illustrative cases will be presented.
