Direct evidence that tumor cells soften when navigating confined spaces

Abstract

By combining topographically patterned substrates with atomic force microscopy, we followed the migration of tumor cells through various stages of confinement while simultaneously measuring elastic properties. We show that tumor cells soften during confined migration, redeploying contractile elements from the basal surface to the lateral walls.
