Abstract
In Caenorhabditis elegans oocytes, end-on kinetochore-microtubule attachments do not form; instead, chromosome alignment is mediated by a protein complex that encircles the chromosome (the “ring complex,” RC). Here we combine high-resolution imaging with mutant analysis to reveal previously unappreciated features of RC and chromosome structure that promote efficient congression and segregation during meiosis.
