Abstract

Increased cell density elevates the incidence of the fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition (FMT) in human lung fibroblasts (HLFs), but mechanical confinement imposed by micropillars has no effect on FMT incidence. HLFs express more α-SMA, a marker of myofibroblasts, and deposit more collagen matrix in response to TGF-β1 when seeded at high density.
