Abstract

The article examined the media image of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China from the perspective of highlighting the image of the region. We selected publications mentioning Xinjiang in the online versions of the publications Rossiyskaya Gazeta and Izvestia as the closest to the leadership of the Russian Federation. The study employed the continuous sampling method, frame and discourse analysis. The relevance of this study is due to the fact that the internal problems of Xinjiang regularly get covered not only by Chinese, but also foreign media. The media are becoming a platform of rivalry between China and the West in terms of creating public opinion among foreign audiences on Xinjiang issues. Publications of Russian media, including Rossiyskaya Gazeta and Izvestia, not only reflect the attitude of the Russian leadership to China's internal ethnic problems, but also contribute to a balanced coverage of China's national policy. Frame analysis of selected publications revealed that the media image of Xinjiang in Rossiyskaya Gazeta and Izvestia is formed around the following core ideas (frames): permanent social crises in Xinjiang; high risk of terrorism in the region, frequent natural disasters; quick response of Chinese government to disasters; unstable political situation, which is skillfully used by a number of Western countries to weaken China's economic influence; Xinjiang has an ancient history and culture and is rich in natural resources; the Chinese government regards Xinjiang as a key region of China's economic development and closely cooperates with Russia in the field of logistics and energy. In general, these materials state that Xinjiang is facing serious social crises due to the abundance of internal and external problems.
