Abstract

Strangles, caused by the host-specific bacteriumStreptococcus equisubsp.equi(SEE), is the most commonly diagnosed infectious disease of horses worldwide. Its ancestor,Streptococcus equisubsp.zooepidemicus(SEZ), is frequently isolated from a wide array of hosts, including horses and humans.
