, the pathogen of plague, also known as the “Black Death,” has caused millions of deaths throughout history. This study reports that
Y. pestis
infection induces mitochondrial fragmentation and abnormal mROS accumulation, and releases mitochondrial contents into the cytoplasm in macrophages. mROS promotes the antibacterial activity of macrophages against
Y. pestis
and increases apoptosis of the infected cells.
