Abstract

Microorganisms that are adapted to extremely acidic conditions, known as extreme acidophiles, are catalysts for rock weathering, metal cycling, and mineral formation in naturally acidic environments. They are also important drivers of large-scale industrial processes such as biomining and contaminant remediation.
