Abstract

Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacterium that causes Q fever in humans. The virulent C. burnetii Nine Mile phase I (NMI) strain causes disease in animal models, while the avirulent NM phase II (NMII) strain does not.
