Abstract
ABSTRACT
Two novel insertion sequence elements, ISLhe
1
and ISLhe
15
, were located upstream of the genes encoding the β-galactosidase enzyme in
Lactobacillus helveticus
commercial starter strains. Strains with the IS
982
family element, ISLhe
1
, demonstrated reduced β-galactosidase activity compared to the
L. helveticus
type strain, whereas strains with the ISLhe
15
element expressed β-galactosidase in the absence of lactose.
