Abstract
ABSTRACTNDM-1 probably emerged inAcinetobacterspecies prior to its dissemination amongEnterobacteriaceae, and NDM-1-like enzymes are increasingly reported inAcinetobacterspecies. Here, we report on the genetic context ofblaNDM-1in the earliest known NDM-1-producing organisms, clinical isolates ofAcinetobacterfrom India in 2005. These strains harborblaNDM-1plasmids of different sizes. The gene is associated with the remnants of the Tn125transposon normally associated withblaNDM-1inAcinetobacterspp. The transposon has been disrupted by the IS26insertion and subsequent movement events.
