Abstract
Enterococci are Gram-positive bacteria that have evolved to thrive as both commensals and pathogens, largely due to their accumulation of mobile genetic elements via horizontal gene transfer. Common agents of horizontal gene transfer include plasmids, transposable elements, and temperate bacteriophages.
