Abstract

Xpert MTB/RIF rapidly detects resistance to rifampicin (RR); however, this test misses I491F-RR conferring the rpoB mutation, common in southern Africa. In addition, Xpert MTB/RIF does not distinguish between viable and dead Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB).
