Abstract

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a serious and fatal disease caused by the parasites Leishmania infantum and Leishmania donovani . The gold standard diagnostic test for VL is the demonstration of parasites or their DNA in spleen, lymph node, or bone marrow aspirates.
