Life and death in Iron Age Ogulinsko-Plaščanska valley

Abstract

Despite the long-standing importance of the Ogulin-Plaški regionin past trade and communication networks, few radiocarbondates have been reported from the area’s prehistoric contexts.This article presents new accelerator mass spectrometry(AMS) radiocarbon dates from the Iapodian sites of Trošmarija,Sultanov grob, and Mala and Velika Metaljka. Radiocarbon datesfrom burial and settlement contexts demonstrate activity atthese sites was underway by the start of the Iron Age, ca. 800 BCand continued for centuries afterward. These new radiocarbondates contribute to our growing understanding of sociopoliticaland cultural development in prehistoric and Roman period ofthe Ogulin-Plaški region.
