Abstract
The article is a review on a pioneering monograph “Chronotope of the Rurikid Polity (911–987)” (Moscow: Aquilon, 2020) by A. S. Shchavelev, senior researcher of the Institute of world history at the Russian Academy of Sciences. Reviewer analyzes the heuristic potential of the analytical chronotopography and Shchavelev’s model of the social and political genesis of the Rurikid Polity. Based on the comparative anthropology and critical source studies, A. S. Shchavelev proposed a fundamentally new approach to solving the key issues of Old Russian politogenesis: how was the Rus’ formed in time and space? How did its borders change during the 10th century? How was its managed? How was its connectivity ensured in the vast and sparsely populated area between Kiev and Veliky Novgorod? Reviewed monograph makes a fundamental contribution to a new round of world discussion about the processes of political genesis on the medieval Europe’s periphery, especially in Scandinavia, the Baltic region and Rus’.
