1. (The Seven Sleepers of Ephesus were the heroes of a famous Christian and Islamic legend that is extant in multiple versions. In brief, during the persecution of Christians [AD 250], 7 Christian soldiers hid in a cave near their native city of Ephesus, where they fell into a miraculous sleep after the cave entry was sealed. During the reign of the Eastern Roman emperor Theodosius II [AD 408-450], the cave was reopened, and the Sleepers awoke, bearing witness to the Christian doctrine of the body's resurrection. The Seven subsequently died, but all bishops who had been persecuted for believing in the Resurrection were absolved.)
