Abstract
Vaccine hesitancy is an increasing phenomenon in many high-income countries, including Italy. It significantly undermines the first indicator for the monitoring of a vaccination strategy that consists in achieving and maintaining adequate vaccination coverage levels. Such a phenomenon is more and more complex and context-specific and varies in time, according to the place and type of vaccine. To implement a proactive prevention concept, the final aim for all the professionals involved in the vaccination programme, namely to accompany parents in a free and conscious choice, must not be underestimated. Actions should be taken coordinately and with the contributions of different healthcare workers and should be based on accountability, collaboration, interdisciplinarity and intersectoriality. Only in this way can health alphabetization, accountability and citizens’ emancipation be achieved.
