Abstract
ABSTRACT
The thyrotrophic, and to a lesser extent the gonadotrophic pituitary secretory systems were inhibited after the intraperitoneal treatment of rats for seventeen days with 100 mg of Lithospermum officinale freeze-dried extract.
The performic acid-alcianblue PAS method revealed morphologic changes in the thyrotrophic elements characterized by the presence of both hypergranulated and so-called »collapse cells«, while the gonadotrophic cells in the periphery of the gland decreased in size as well as in number. The above changes were not absolutely definite at five days but were quite evident after eleven days of treatment. Marked involution of both systems was still evident fourteen days after cessation of treatment.
