Abstract
ABSTRACT
Electrocoagulation of the hypothalamic area between the fornix columns at the level of the paraventricular nuclei induces a pronounced inhibition of thyroid function. In addition, these lesions cause adrenal atrophy and a corresponding decrease in corticosteroid output. However, the pituitary-adrenal system of the lesioned animals is still able to respond to stimuli which activate this system in normal.
Experiments on thyroidectomized animals indicate that the effects of the lesions on the adrenal glands are to a great extent due to inhibition of thyroid function.
