Abstract
ABSTRACT
A simple and quantitative procedure for the extraction and measurement of total urinary radioactive steroid metabolites is described.
The urinary excretion of topically applied 14C oestrone + 3H 17β-oestradiol and of 14C cortisol (11β, 17, 21-trihydroxy-pregn-4-ene-3, 20-dione) alone was studied with and without the addition of carrier oestrone, in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Over 80 percent of the cortisol, 7.5 to 41 percent of the oestrone, and 3.4 to 20 percent of the 17β-oestradiol metabolites appeared in the urine within 72 hours. Neither the ovarian status of the subjects nor the presence of carrier oestrone appeared to influence these results.
