Ultra-broadband and high purity tapered mode converter for mode division multiplexing systems

Abstract

This paper proposes a three-section tapered mode converter that can convert guided optical mode LP01 to LP02. The coupling section, the coupling enhancement section, and the undesired power reduction section are connected in sequence and shows operation with ultra-bandwidth of 178 nm with over 20 dB extinction ratio, the LP02 normalized power accounted for the high proportion. The proposed structure represents ultra-broadband and high purity component for use in mode division multiplexing systems.
