4. If the optic axis is strictly normal to the cell plates, the crossed polarizers can be set in any position without giving any transmission in the dark state. Thisa priorirequires perfect surface stabilization and a tilt angle of 45°. At 42° there will be some, but hardly detectable, variation on rotating the polarizers. But even for a θ value of, let us say, 40° the extinction will be useful for a device, because a polarizer setting giving an excellent dark state can still be found, with a very small variation around that state when the polarizers are rotated.
