4. Under typical operating conditions, an electron produces about 1000 photons upon impact with the LEED phosphor screen. On the average only about two of these are collected by the objective and only about one reaches the photocathode of the photomultiplier. Typical photocathodes have quantum efficiencies of about 15%, and the probability for detection is therefore also ̃15%. This probability can be increased, for example, by use of a larger objective lens.
