2. The presence of C II radiation was reported previously [Proceedings of the Second United Nations International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy(United Nations, Geneva, 1958), Vol. 31, p. 319]. This was observed from visible spectra taken with a monochromator looking into an off-axis port. This only permitted a tangential view of the outer 1 cm of the chamber. The radiation from the cooler outer layer was probably masked when the monochromator was viewing the intense central portion of the discharge.
