Abstract

Urology is unique as a surgical specialty. The emergency workload is minimal compared with its nearest relative, general surgery, and patient turnover is faster than in most disciplines. However, the elective workload is significant and with an ageing population is set to increase. Increased education and awareness about organ-specific cancers (eg prostate) combined with target demands for fast-track cancer referral has contributed to the workload of urologists.
