Abstract
In June 2010 the then Health Minister, Andrew Lansley, announced that hospitals would not be paid for readmissions within 30 days of discharge for all elective patients. This was thought to be in response to reducing bed numbers and climbing readmission rates. Reports have suggested that there had been a 50% increase in readmissions between 1998 and 2008. This government policy signalled a change that makes hospitals responsible for patient care for up to 30 days after discharge.
