Abstract

Summary Surfing has gained significant scholarly attention recently, yet Hainan Island has received less attention. Hainan Island is an emerging destination for the global surfing community. This case study provides a historical overview of surfing in Hainan and discusses the current state of challenges and opportunities related to the surfing industry on the island. The case study also discusses the cultural and economic impacts of surfing on the island, including the emergence of surf schools, the hosting of surfing competitions, and the development of related infrastructure in Riyue Bay. We also discuss the development of surfing after this sport became an Olympic discipline. Additionally, the case study highlights some key surf spots in Hainan, such as Riyue Bay in Wanning, and discusses the unique characteristics that make these spots ideal for surfing. Overall, the case study provides a comprehensive overview of the development and current state of surfing in Hainan Island, shedding light on the increasing significance of surfing in the region’s tourism industry and its potential for future growth.
