Abstract
In this book chapter, the development, safety, evaluation, and health benefits of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics are examined. The antimutagenic effect, antihypertensive action, benefits to the immune system, and antioxidant effects of synbiotics, as well as the application of synbiotics in Helicobacter pylori infections, diarrhoea, allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, and irritable bowel syndrome are discussed. Also, advances in synbiotic foods from traditional use to the modern application in the medical field are presented.
