Abstract
This chapter describes the domestication and geographical distribution of Chenopodium spp., with emphasis on C. quinoa. The correlation between human settlements and agriculture development is mentioned. An overview of quinoa breeding using a variety of wild relatives is presented, and the degree of genetic diversity in this crop as a result of genetic improvement efforts is described.
