Abstract
This chapter reviews the current understanding of the physiopathology of group B streptococcal (GBS) meningitis, highlighting important bacterial virulence factors and host interactions that promote disease progression. The relationship between bacteraemia and the development of GBS meningitis, and the mechanisms of GBS immune evasion, GBS invasion of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and GBS activation of the central nervous system's inflammatory response are discussed.
