AbstractThe chemistry of nitrate and nitrates, their ionic nature, solubility in water, chemical structure, and sorption by soils are explained, and contrasted with ammonium and its behaviour in soil. The availability and vulnerability of nitrate in soil, the process of diffusion, as well as the effects of soil texture and soil water movement on dissolved nitrate in soil, are described.
