AbstractThis paper provides information on the different benefits from the forests in Croatia, estimated based on the total economic value framework, which are described in terms of: forest resources (area and typologies); institutional aspects (ownership and size of properties, and administration); and the contribution of the forest to the national economy (gross domestic product and employment, international trade, and forest-based industries). Also included is an estimation of the values of Croatian forests which are categorized as: direct use values (timber and firewood, fruits, mushrooms and truffles, medicinal plants, fibre, honey, tourism and recreation, hunting, and fodder and forage); indirect use values (erosion control, watershed protection and carbon sequestration); option, bequest and existence values; and the negative externalities linked to forests.
