Current chemotherapy of animal trypanosomiasis.

Abstract
This chapter describes the strategies for and factors influencing trypanocide usage in domestic livestock. The development and mechanisms of drug resistance, the pathogenicity of drug-resistant parasites, the impact of drug-resistant trypanosomes on livestock productivity and the techniques commonly used to detect drug resistance are discussed. The guidelines to delay the development of drug resistance and for action when drug resistance is detected are given. The need to establish quality control of trypanocides is emphasized.
