AbstractThis chapter focuses on the behavioural responses of nematodes to abiotic factors in their environment, including energy (temperature, electromagnetic waves, electrical field/charge and gravity), chemical (oxygen, carbon dioxide, other chemicals and pH) and physical factors (mechanoreception, soil matrix and water potential). It discusses the adaptations that occur when nematodes are exposed to adverse environmental conditions, and emphasizes that nematode sensitivity, tolerance and response to the abiotic environment are keys to understanding nematode behaviour.
