AbstractA detailed account is given of the Nature and Ecotourism Accreditation Programme (NEAP) of Australia, a detailed accreditation-based environmental performance ecolabel designed specifically for ecotourism operations. It provides accreditation for individual tourism products rather than the entire companies. Among the topics discussed are: the evolution of NEAP (the first version was published in 1996); the structure of the second version of NEAP; specific criteria of NEAP; and other tourism companies that are members of other ecolabel schemes. 273 products from over 100 companies have either basic or advanced ecotourism accreditation under NEAP as of January 2000. The scheme is currently being expanded through the addition of a less stringent nature tourism category.
