Schistosoma nasale Rao, 1933 (Trematoda: Schistosomatidae) causative agent of nasal schistosomiasis of animals in the Indian subcontinent - an overview.

Abstract

Schistosoma nasale is a digenetic trematode found in the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa of cattle and buffaloes. This snail-borne parasite is the cause of nasal schistosomiasis which has been recorded from the majority of the provinces and the neighbouring countries of India. The disease is commonly known as 'snoring disease' or nasal granuloma of cattle. Cattle inflicted with this disease present with nodules, cauliflower-like growths in the nasal cavity with a mucopurulent discharge, dyspnoea and usually had snoring sound on respiration. The main focus of this review is prevalence of S. nasale and its life cycle and treatment methods.
