Abstract
This chapter explores the nature of the position and experience of animals within tourism and why people seek out animal attractions while in the holiday environment. It considers not just those animals that we wish to see or engage with but also those that we eat, as in the case restaurants offering exotic meat. The chapter also explores the rise of animals as guests and employees within the tourism experience. It also examines how the tourism industry has sanitized the holiday environment, removing from it animals and animal behaviour that offends or scares us. The chapter hints at the welfare implications for animals in relation to tourism.
