Transport of pigs.

Abstract

This chapter discusses the animal welfare implications of transport to pigs, in terms of stress, coping mechanisms and thermoregulation. The effect of transport on product quality and contamination are also discussed. The last part of this chapter summarizes the main recommendations for holding yards, ramps and vehicles and treatment during transport (driving, feeding, watering, loading density and microclimate factors).
