AbstractThe surgical alternatives to home parenteral nutrition and small bowel transplantation in patients with short bowel syndrome are reported, including the indications for this type of therapy. The different aspects of the segmental reversal of the small bowel, which include the operative procedure, postoperative complications, mortality and long-term results are also discussed based on data from 15 patients that had undergone this procedure. Also, other surgical techniques are considered, including proximal colonic interposition, intestinal valve creation and small bowel tapering or lengthening.
