Abstract
The Allerton Project is based at Loddington (Leicestershire, UK), a 333-ha mixed arable and livestock farm. The project incorporates its own farm business with a wide ranging environmental research programme and demonstration activities. This chapter describes the Allerton Project's approach to multifunctionality, based on its own research and in the context of its own farm business. Examples of activities on the farm that have multiple functions are discussed, including: pheasant shooting; woodland thinning; wildlife habitat management; minimum tillage; and water protection through buffer strip pools. These examples from Loddington show that there is compatibility between environmental objectives when a multifunctional approach is taken. Environmental objectives can also be compatible with economic and social objectives.
