Ecology of Streptomyces in soil and rhizosphere.

Abstract

The importance of streptomycetes in soil and rhizosphere are reviewed. Streptomycetes in soils can act as producers of bioactive metabolites and can be used commercially as inoculant biocontrol agents primarily to control fungal root diseases. The enumeration, isolation and screening of Actinomycetes for potential biocontrol activity are studied. Strategies for the molecular characterization of actinobacterial community diversity are described. Finally, the root colonization studies of Streptomyces isolates from the rhizosphere are reviewed.
