Intercultural interaction of the population of ancient Tanais in III BC – V AD as an element of outstanding universal value of historical heritage

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of settled and nomadic culture symbiosis, a distinctive feature of ancient Tanais – one of the eminent centres of Bosporan kingdom. The authors analyses peculiarities of intercultural interaction between Hellenic population and nomadic tribes of Don region – Sarmatians and Meots in this particular geocultural region. Moreover, the research is devoted to the main attributes of Outstanding Universal Value of Tanais being an exclusive evidence of pre-existing unique intercultural phenomenon during the development of which interchange of cultural values, mutual influence and transfusion took place between Ancient Greek and Persian speaking nomadic rites and traditions as well as sedentarization of Sarmatians and Meots and transformation of their cultural code.
