Abstract

Abstract A new species of varunid crab genus Parahelice, Parahelice schubarti sp. nov., is described from Sulawesi, Indonesia. This new species can be distinguished from other species in Parahelice and Pseudohelice by the characters of its male suborbital cristae, chelipeds, and first gonopod. Additionally, support for this new species is provided by molecular results obtained from the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI). Genetic results suggest that two additional genera may need to be recognized within the larger Parahelice/Pseudohelice species complex, necessitating more genetic markers, especially nuclear markers.
